Just started downloading these guys, and I've listened since Episode 6. Great stuff. I really appreciate hearing honest, informal talk about Linux, something you can't get anywhere else.
Unless I missed it, next episode you guys should all say which distro you're running and why. I'm curious to hear the resulting discussion!
I started using linux
deathalele (not verified) - July 22, 2009 @ 3:51pm
I started using linux because I didn't feeel like:
turning my computer on, making a cup of tea, drinking a cup of tea, pouring a new cup of tea, eating half a pack of buiscuits, drinking mmy tea, twiddling my thumbs for a bit, then entering my username and pasword, to see a shiny vista install
also i heard about linux in my ICT class when the teacher said 'A year ago i thought everybody would be using linux a year from now'
Squeaky toy
Andrew - July 22, 2009 @ 4:27pm
Damn these squeaky toys, coming over here stealing our jobs. Still, at least it wasn't a tub of lard.
Sqeaky toy
Anonymous Penguin (not verified) - July 23, 2009 @ 4:01pm
the squeaky toy was freaking awesome, you need to get squeaky toy back into the studio more often!
Re: Sqeaky toy
TuxRadar - July 23, 2009 @ 6:47pm
It's less a matter of getting the toy back into the studio, and more getting it to do LXF's spell checking.

Me too, quite a lot, good idea. :)
RE: Distro's
JR - July 24, 2009 @ 6:16pm
What's the betting at least one of them uses a Mac.
I've seen the screen shots in LXF. I'm onto you guys.
Macs
Huw - July 24, 2009 @ 10:19pm
They've said in the past that they all use Macs in the office to do the actual magazine part of their jobs. Shocking! C'mon chaps, can Linux do it all or not? Use Linux for everything, you traitors!
No lion eggs for me :(
dazfuller - July 25, 2009 @ 10:59am
Just thought you guys might want to know, I've got an HTC Magic phone here (Android OS) with the Google voice search app installed and saying "Lenux Format" into gives me "Linux Format" in the search results.
Endorseing your podcast
Sabianadmin (not verified) - July 25, 2009 @ 9:26pm
hello
i was wondering if would be possible to post a link to your latest podcasts on my site ( http://p-quinn.com ) the site is a gadgets and linux news and reviews site, but serves as a blog about our up and coming Operating system RevLin which has its roots in linux. we will be posting a podcast of our own with both topics in it but wish to have a linux dedicated podcast also. I just wanted to get permission before i went ahead with this plan. you can contact me at sabianadmin@gmail.com.
Regards

I remember feeling similarly let down when I learned they used macs to edit Your Sinclair, back in the day. Maybe Future Publishing just happen to like macs. Or is it an attempt to be neutral? (MacFormat would be edited on a typewriter, with someone in the office making woodcuts for the pictures.)
Otoh, did they say what OS they use on those macs?
Susan linton in the podcast?
deathalele (not verified) - July 27, 2009 @ 5:11pm
could you get susan linton into you're podcasts, having read her articles i see she has some good points to convey would make arguments more interesting.
also you'le have five speakers so will be able to start the jackson 5 tribute band
new presenter
surrond Penguin (not verified) - July 29, 2009 @ 9:31am
If you get Susan onto the podcasts, will it be in surround 5.1?
5 presenters 1 listner?
Only kidding, great pods always download and convert to mp3 (yes mp3) and listen in the car on the way to office.
@surrond Penguin
TuxRadar - July 29, 2009 @ 10:50am
No need to convert to MP3 - the link that says "Download as low-quality MP3" is your signal that we've done the hard work for you. Converting from Ogg to MP3 will undoubtedly sound worse than just using our MP3.
X Windows?
TuxTeX (not verified) - July 29, 2009 @ 11:41am
Since when is Microsoft developing software for x.org? It's the X Window System, not Windows. Microsoft may not sue for portions of Mono, but they could come after you for trademark issues <insert "Jaws" music here>
to convert or not to convert
surround Penguin (not verified) - July 29, 2009 @ 8:42pm
Yes I can download directly in mp3 but I'm wasting bandwidth which is more important than a bit of loss in quality when the content is only speech.
To Be or not to Be?
Alias (not verified) - July 30, 2009 @ 8:22am
To convert, or not to convert: that is the question:
Whether 'tis clearer in the mind to suffer
The audio and video of outrageous fortune,
Or to take closed source against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That closed source is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's code;
For in that sleep of open source, what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this internet,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of MicroSoft;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of MicroSoft,
The oppressor's wrong, the community's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a keyboard,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover'd kernel from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pitch and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of Open Source.

Do you ever use betas or release candidates, and why/why not? Do you ever use beta/rc operating systems, browsers, or just small apps?
Betas/RCs
Pastychomper - July 31, 2009 @ 9:57am
I use betas if they have some really good feature, like the beta web browsers I used to use a lot until Opera finally made Java work (before that they all seemed to be slow, ugly or lacking Java...and yes I do feel old :p ), or if I'm in the mood for bug-hunting. The rest of the time I choose stability over bleeding-edgeness.
I don't think I've ever used a beta operating system unless you count Windows, which I have to use at work and never feels like a full release.
It is 20% Time
theguywholikeslinux - August 1, 2009 @ 12:02pm
In google you have one day a week to work on your own project, 20% time. Just incase you were wondering.
Where's my .ogg?
gurrier (not verified) - August 3, 2009 @ 1:37pm
I thought you may not notice the comment on episode 12 podcast so am posting here also.
The episode 12 Ogg feed has an mp3 format file.
@gurrier
TuxRadar - August 3, 2009 @ 2:03pm
You're right - should be fixed now. Thanks!
